Frequently asked questions
What is SurroundMe?
A private app from SurroundMe, Inc., a nonprofit, free for surrounded families. It helps children and teens facing serious health challenges, and their families, stay connected to friends, school, and everyday life, with their circle of support sharing good moments and stepping in with practical help.
Who can use SurroundMe?
Everyone in the app must be 13 or older. SurroundMe is built around children and teens, and it works for adult patients too: an adult can run their own circle, or a family member can set one up for them. During testing, SurroundMe is invitation only: a family invites the people in their circle. The app is on iPhone now; Android and a web version are planned.
Does it cost anything?
Not for surrounded families. The child at the center of the circle, their parents, their siblings and one family organizer get every feature with no limits, free, always. Supporters also get every feature free; free supporter accounts include a set amount of storage and call time. A paid option for more is coming.
What happens when a free supporter account runs out of room?
Everything keeps working, including reading updates, sending messages and cheering the family on. Adding new photos or videos, or making calls and livestreams beyond the monthly minutes, will need the paid option once it arrives. Some things never count against a supporter: replying to the surrounded child’s own requests, calls the child starts, and finishing a call already in progress. Nothing is ever deleted.
Is SurroundMe for medical updates?
Mostly, it’s for connection and practical help. Parents can share health updates if they choose, or let their circle know they’re not ready yet. SurroundMe doesn’t provide medical advice or care.
Who can see what we share?
Only the people the family invites. The family decides who joins and can remove people or posts at any time. Health information stays private and is never sold or shared.
How can my family join the pilot?
Email info@surroundme.org and tell us a little about your family. We’ll be in touch as we open the pilot to more families.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
SurroundMe, Inc. is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, and our application for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is pending with the IRS. Please talk with your tax advisor about deductibility.
